Andrei Gamarț (b. 1980, Chișinău) trained as a painter in the Moldovan capital, earning a BFA in Painting from the College of Fine Arts in 1999 and an MFA in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2004. Alongside his visual practice he is active as a writer and poet: his debut volume, Roșul comun (Arc, 2001), was followed by Măsura aproapelui (Museum, 2004). In 2008 he moved to Bucharest, where he has been based ever since.
His early solo exhibitions took place in Chișinău, including Kosmographia at the C. Brancusi Exhibition Center in 2005, before he began showing regularly in Bucharest with The Man Who Walks in Shade (Montage Gallery, 2009), The Error (2012), and This Garden Was Enchanted (2014), the latter two at Zorzini Gallery. He is represented by Mobius Gallery in Bucharest, where he has presented the solo exhibitions Mirror for the Full Moon (2016), Seasons (2017), Eclipse (2021), and Chimera (2026), and has taken part in the gallery's international group projects, among them Homo Deus in New York (2018).
In recent years his projects have extended beyond the canvas. Waiting for Something That Has Already Found Us (STRATA Gallery, Bucharest, 2022), accompanied by a text by curator Beral Madra, combined oil painting with live-stream projections from surveillance cameras located in different parts of the world. The solo exhibition Tot ce ai văzut se va împlini, organized with the Brașov Art Museum and Mobius Gallery, opened at the Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University in Brașov in 2023 and travelled to the Constanța Art Museum in 2024, bringing together canvases made between 2013 and 2024 alongside his first audio installation.
Gamarț's work is dedicated to a sustained study of the relationships among matter, light, and memory. Light, approached as a primordial matter, has been the central subject of his painting since the early 2010s, and his imagery occupies a territory suspended between reality and dream, taking in themes of time, memory, innocence, and error. He works in oil on canvas, drawing, and engraving, and has increasingly incorporated video and sound installation. He lives and works in Bucharest.
